Department of TB & Respiratory Medicine was established in the year 2008 with undergraduate teaching programme. The department has fully trained and dedicated faculty with 2 Professors, 3 Assistant Professors and 1 Senior Resident. The out -patient department in the 4 th floor of the Medical College block has census of 60- 80 per day and the inpatient bed occupancy is almost 80-90%.
The department has a fully fledged pulmonary function testing (PFT) laboratory with complete Spirometry and DLCO. A dedicated PFT technician is in charge of the PFT Lab.
The TB cell as part of RNTCP was inaugurated on 12.2.2014. A Lab Technician (LT) and Health Visitor (HV) are appointed by the District TB Officer (DTO) to cater to the needs of TB patients. The patients within 5 km radius are initiated on DOTS from Saveetha medical college hospital and are regularly followed up.
The department has Bronchoscopy suit in the 3 rd floor. We routine perform bronchial wash, brush and bronchial biopsies. The census is almost 4-5/week. The other procedures which are regularly performed in the department include pleural fluid aspirations, ICD insertion, FNAC of lymph node and pleural biopsies.
The post graduate course in the speciality of TB and Respiratory Medicine was started in the year 2015 with the intake of 1 PG per year. The post graduate course follows a standard PG curriculum.
Allied Health Sciences course in Respiratory Medicine was started in the year 2016 that follows a standard curriculum with regular assessments.
Apart from the regular departmental activities, the Department of TB and Respiratory medicine is actively involved in the inter-departmental activities, conducting regular seminars, workshops and CMEs
